Precisely Terminated


At birth everyone is implanted with a microchip in their skull; for the Cillineese, these chips are used to control them and to keep them working as slaves. One slave, Monica, is a 16-year-old girl who managed to escape the implanting and is now in hiding. She lives amongst the slaves in the Cantral palace and is the only one who can go around without a trace. The fate of millions rest on Monica's shoulders as the only chip-less person in the world. She must find a way to destroy the computers and free the slaves from the nobles' iron fist before it's too late.

Welcome to Homeschool Authors.  Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Amanda L. Davis. I'm currently twenty years old.  I'm fifth out of seven children, and all of us were homeschooled through high school. Most people would never have expected me to become a writer. I have severe dyslexia, which is a learning disability that makes it difficult for me to read or write. Because of dyslexia, I didn't read on my own until I was 11 and even at 14 I couldn't put a coherent paragraph together. It's been a long road, but with a lot of lessons and practice I finally became a published author when I turned 19. I wrote Precisely Terminated when I was 18 and 19.
     Other than writing, I also enjoy sewing, spinning yarn on a spinning wheel, embroidery, and cooking for my family. We also have a large garden where we live in Tennessee, and we spend quite a bit of time outside.
        
What made you start writing?
I started writing when I saw what an impact story telling could have on people. My dad is Bryan Davis, a well known Christian fantasy author, and he travels all around the country on book tour. I usually accompany him on these tours, and I get to see first hand how writing can change people's lives. After a few years of traveling, I decided I wanted to write as well.

How long did it take you to write Precisely Terminated?
It took me about six months to write Precisely Terminated, but then I had to edit it after that. The editing process probably took me about two months.

What is it about?With microchips implanted in their skulls at birth, the slaves of Cantral and Cillineese have labored under the tyrannical rule of the nobles and their computers for decades. Monica, a                 noble who avoided the implanting and escaped a death sentence at the age of four, is now sixteen and is in hiding. She lives with the slaves inside the walls of the Cantral palace,                         pretending to be one of them while the slave council plots a way to use her chip-less state to destroy the all-powerful computers that strike down any hint of rebellion.
The nobles hear of Monica's survival and try to exterminate her before she ruins their upper-class utopia. The rebels send her to find a missing paper bearing instructions on how to shut             down the computers that control the chips in Cillineese, a major city-state. The nobles are alerted to the plan and prepare to seal Cillineese in a giant dome to gas the inhabitants,                         including Monica.
 The fate of millions rides on Monica's shoulders. As the only chip-less person in the world, she must find the paper, destroy the computers, and free Cillineese from the nobles' iron fist             before they strike with the ultimate punishment-death for everyone inside the city walls.

Do you have more books on the way?
Definitely! Precisely Terminated is the first book in the Cantral Chronicles which will be a trilogy. The sequel, Noble Imposter, comes out in the summer of this year, and it is already finished being written.

What is the best piece of writing advice you ever received?
Some of the best writing advice I've received is to learn the craft. Many people assume they can just sit down and write well. Writing well is very difficult and it takes years to learn how to do it properly. I'm still learning, I still listen to classes. A writer never finishes learning, and a new writer definitely needs to take classes and get any advice he or she can.

Most books I have read on purity have been let-downs.  Although by people I personally admire, and people with good intentions, they left me feeling like my life didn’t matter until I got married.  It took me a few weeks after reading those books to feel normal again. Rebakah Snyder’s book was different.  It made me want to send it to all my girlfriends and say: "This is how it is supposed to be."

Beyond Waiting is not a book on how to survive your waiting years or a manual on how to treat guys.  Beyond waiting deals with the heart of the problem; our value. The reason many girls toss purity out the window or lose it is because they think their value comes from a man. This book will remind girls of an often forgotten fact:  God did not make you as half a person.  You are whole and complete as you are.  I guy is not going to make you any more then you already are.

I highly recommend this book to every unmarried girl. I hope that the pages of this little gem will encourage you as much as it did me.

Welcome to Homeschool Authors!  Introduce yourself to.
My name is Rebekah and I grew up in a town in Ohio that you've probably never heard of. Then my call to missions led me to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia (and yet another town you've never heard of) where I'm living out my dream of writing and ministering to junior high aged girls. I'm a lover of fairytales and books in general. Oh, and I'm the author of Beyond Waiting.

What was the best part of being homeschooled for you?
I loved the flexibility in my schedule and that I could work at my own pace and choose which subject I wanted to tackle next. I was always finished long before public school kids got home, and since I didn't have any additional homework, I had time to do whatever I really wanted to do - like write!

What inspired you to start writing?
I've been telling stories all my life without ever truly realizing it. They played out in my mind or through my dollhouse characters and flowed from my lips as I tucked my younger siblings into bed. I'd created "books" as a child, but didn't get truly serious about writing until I was nearly fourteen and was introduced to a new curriculum called Writing Strands. The curriculum was geared toward students who don't like to write, so I always finished my assignments early, but what I loved most about this curriculum was that it inspired creativity. Unlike my Language and Grammar books which confined me to short expositions or topics in which I had no interest, Writing Strands encouraged me to write stories - stories about whatever I desired. And when my mom started commenting on my dialogue and storytelling abilities, it made me want to thrive in this new-found gifting.

What caused you to write Beyond Waiting?
Ironically, Beyond Waiting is not a work of fiction. (Trust me, when I felt called to write this book, Jesus and I had words about that.) And surprisingly, I can't remember the exact details that began this long journey. I know that I was talking with a friend about her search for Prince Charming and she was lamenting about how discouraging it is to wait for Mr. Right to show up. While I can't even remember who that particular friend was, I do remember with most clarity punching the phrase "definition of the word wait" into my Google search box. And the answer I found is what permanently altered the next two years of my life.


What I found was seven definitions of the word "wait" that made me go, "Ugh. This is what waiting is? Well, it's no wonder we aren't content to be single!" I decided that the world needed to hear this message about waiting, and since no one else was stepping up to the task... 

What is it about?
Simply put, Beyond Waiting is about NOT waiting for Prince Charming. It goes through those seven (rather depressing) definitions of the word "wait" and reminds us that we were made for so much more than merely waiting. It's a book about romantic relationships, with the main focus being on making Prince Charming less of our focus and allowing ourselves to get caught up in the amazing life God has for us in this moment - while we are yet single. There's a lot of emphasis on fairytales throughout the book because I believe those stories have shaped our views on life and love and relationships. But the point I try to get across in the usage of these fairytales is that "happily ever after" is only the ending and that the true romance, excitement, and adventure lie within the "once upon a time." Beyond Waiting is a call to live the side of the fairytale that we often overlook.

Do you plan to write more books?
Absolutely. I was actually in the middle of my first novel when God so rudely interrupted and sent me on this much-needed journey of a lifetime. (Jesus is cool like that.) Now that I'm finally finished with this process, I'm back to working on this piece of YA fiction (which I'm super excited about and hope to share with you in another year or so). I still believe that I'm a fiction writer and I have a lot of stories up my sleeve, but I'm also coming to terms with the fact that God is not finished using me to write non-fiction either. Still, I really think that a novel is going to be the next thing that pops out of me.

How does your faith affect your writing?
The same way it affects my life - it pops up in the most unexpected places. My faith and I can't be separated, so naturally it spills out upon the things that I write. It's funny, actually, because I don't realize what an affect it has until I go back and read what I've written. When I completed the first draft of Beyond Waiting, I thought I would go back and add some Bible verses to back up the truth I was sharing. Imagine my surprise when I found scripture references sprinkled all throughout my manuscript! I hadn't even realized I was doing it; it came so naturally.

Do you have any final thoughts you would like to share?
You, dear reader, are a complete person with your own thoughts and dreams and unique personality. And while it's natural to dream of being married someday, you don't have to make that desire the focus of this day. It's time to leave Prince Charming in the future where he belongs. It's time to discover your purpose and live it with passion. It's time to trust that God really does have every single aspect of your life in His hands and He will not let you down. Even if you never read my book, I hope you'll walk away from this interview knowing that your dreams were not meant for someone else to fulfill. They are something that you have to be willing to fight for. Live the journey, embrace the moments, and believe that every season of life is a gift to be cherished. Yes, even the season of singleness.

Book review: Duty by Rachel Rossano

Was this man a noble or a foot soldier? Bound by the words of their vows, they face a rough future. They must forge a marriage while battling betrayal, accusations of treason, and villains from the past. Survival depends on their precarious trust in each other. Failure could mean death.

I was so excited when Rachel asked me to review this book. Although I have followed her blog and Facebook page, I had yet to read one of her books. After reading Duty, I can't wait to read another book by her.

This book kept me turning pages. From the opening line, I was hooked. It was fast paced but not dazzlingly so.  I also instantly connected with Tomas and Brielle and loved getting to know them.

This story, though set in a fictional country, felt well researched. As a history buff whose favorite time period is the Middle Ages, I was very impressed with the historical aspects of this book. I especially liked the attitudes displayed by the women at the beginning of the book. To often, we put our 21st century ideas of love, and marriage into historical fiction. Women didn't expect to marry for love, or even marry someone they knew well. They may have wanted that, but it wasn't the expectation.

The romance was so sweet. I just loved how it unfolded. Because the characters are married for most of the book,  and the romance comes after marriage, this book is for older audiences  However, Rachel was very discreet and so a someone in their middle teens might like it.

I highly recommend this book for those who like romance.

Introduce yourself to us.

My name is Rachel Burkum, and I'm a writer of novels, short stories, poetry and more. I was born and raised in NY state and homeschooled K-12. I currently reside in Iowa where I work as a store manager and layout/design assistant at a Christian non-profit organization that produces Bible visuals for deaf people. While not working or writing, I dabble in photography, enjoy gardening and horseback riding, and I am a black belt Taekwondo student.

What was your favorite homeschool memory?
Flexible hours and one-on-one attention from my teacher/mother. I firmly believe that much of my well-rounded education is directly related to the lack of busy classroom pressure, and the privilege of being taught by someone who truly cared and was willing to help me understand what I was learning and not just teach me to input the correct answers.

What made you start writing?
I always loved creative writing in school, but really didn't gain an avid interest until high school. As children, a friend of mine and I would often pretend to be characters on a made-up horse ranch. Later, we'd often joke about writing down the story, but I'm not sure what finally convinced me to actually do so. I had so much fun that the "story" evolved into a short novel. After that, I was hooked. I couldn't stop writing.

What is Discovering the Dawn about?
Discovering the Dawn is about two main characters learning to move on from their pasts. Kate is a bitter young woman, hanging on to the pain of her father's death. She lives with her aunt and uncle on their horse farm, and when her uncle hires a new stable hand, she cannot stand seeing someone take her father's place. Matt is running scared, but no one knows why. He feels God has led him to a new life until he realizes Kate will do all in her power to see him leave the horse farm for good. Something will have to change in order for both young people to work through the shadows of their pasts and discover the dawn together.

What inspired you to write it?
Working through the past is something with which many people struggle. I suppose there's a part of me that hopes this plot might inspire or touch someone who can relate. In all honesty though, inspiration has really come mostly from figments of my imagination. All of my novels, so far, contain faith, love and horses. My faith in God drives me to incorporate it into all plots. Good clean romance is always fun, so I like sprinkling that into stories as well. For many years, horseback riding was the main focus of my life, gaining me much experience and the ability to incorporate that knowledge through my books. Inspiration? It's all around me.

Do you have any new books in the works?
Right now I'm working on a devotion book for horse-lovers while holding several more plots for novels in the wings. Having more than one project going at a time seems to feed my inspiration so I try to always have something in the works.

What would you say to those who what to write a book?

Do it! If you have a passion to write, then by all means, write. Who's to say whether or not it may become a published book? If it does, then it is as great accomplishment to be proud of. And if it doesn't, writing is never, ever wasted. It's a win-win situation.


Do you have anything else you would like to share?
If there's one thing I've learned through my writing, is that it's an adventure that has yet to reveal a destination. Writing opens the door to worlds beyond imagination, expressing thoughts often hindered by the tongue, yet given life through those beautiful blank pages. God has given me a passion to write, and I feel blessed. I can only hope that what I've written may bless others as well.

Book Review: Torn Heart

I started reading this book on the heels of a self-published book that made me cringe. Once you have a bad experience, you wonder if you have read all the good self-published books.  This book proved that self-published books are, many times, wonderful. It restored my faith in the self-publishing community.  Thank you Ellyn!

This book started out as a nice story and an enjoyable one, but about a third of the way through it took a twist and became a totally awesome book! I felt it was a unique story with unexpected twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Ellyn has a wonderful way with description and characters.  The only weak part of her book that I found was that were a couple of references to things that seemed out of place in a medieval/fantasy world.  However, I only think that there were two or three places where that happened.

Jacha was a very real, relatable character. Her internal struggle between the two sides is believable and takes unexpected turns.  It was by far my favorite part of the book, and what made me want to keep turning those pages.

For those who try to avoid romance, you are in luck with this book.  There is only a hint of romance for the main character.  More of a maybe-when-we’re-older-but-for-now-we’re-just-friends type of romance which begs for a sequel. As for age range I think that even though there is some violence (what would a book about a rebellion be without a battle) that any child can read it.

I highly recommend Torn Heart for people looking for a non-magical adventure book.

Introducing...

Ellyn Gibbs!






First, tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am sixteen and I self-published my first book when I was fifteen. I live in Minnesota with my parents, my grandma, and my five younger brothers - and no, none of us say “You betcha” on a regular basis.

My three cats and my horse Indy are four of my best friends, I love drinking tea, I practice knife throwing and archery in my spare time, I love the smell of crisp, wintry days, and I’m obsessed with British period dramas like Pride and Prejudice. I have vowed to learn to play the banjo someday. I long to be a redhead, I manage to be a complete romantic and a tomboy at the same time, and there’s nothing I find so rejuvenating as reading my Bible or cleaning the house.

What is your favorite Homeschool memory?
That would have to be in seventh grade, when my brothers and I got to make geometric shapes out of colored marshmallows and toothpicks on the first day of school. Then we ate the marshmallows.
Can’t get any better than that.

What started you writing?
My dad. He really encouraged me in writing, because he was writing a story at the same time I began my first one, and he was always willing to read my writings and give me advice.

I started getting really serious when, at about age eleven, I did a program for school called “How to Write the Novel Way.” It forced me to finish my first “novel,” since it was technically schoolwork.

What role does your faith play in your writing?
I don’t write books that are explicitly Christian, but I still believe that my faith is present in what I write. These days, it can be dangerous to walk into the young adult section of the library and pick up a random book because you never know what you might find. Needless to say, some young adults don’t want to fill their mind with crude language and other trash, but it seems as if that’s all there is to read.

I want to be one who supplies young adults with fiction that inspires them to aim high, to work hard, and to break out of the unflattering teenage stereotype.

I want to keep in accordance with Philippians 4:8, which says, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things.” Writers can have all this and have a great story at the same time!

What is Torn Heart about?
Torn Heart is the story of a young thief, Jacha Simyrna, who finds herself with a choice to make. When the cruel Queen Livia catches her stealing in the palace of Garnethall, she spares Jacha’s life, but commands her to spy on a peasant family who is suspected to be playing an influential role in a brewing rebellion.

The queen promises great rewards, and Jacha is content to work for money at first. However, as she experiences the love and acceptance the peasants have to give, Jacha wonders whether the side with the most gold to offer is always the side to take.

What would you tell someone who wants to start writing books?
Writing a book isn't a walk in the park. Don’t do it for the glory, because if that’s all that drives you, you’ll have to get your fifteen minutes of fame somewhere else.

I will also tell you this - writing is never a waste. I wrote two completed novels, along with countless novel beginnings, before I got one that could be self-published. However, I don’t regret any of the work I did on previous books, because they were helping me to become a better writer. Practice, practice, practice!
